With the beautiful smell of flowers and the slight breeze of spring air, also comes the dreadful flu season. Yikes! Not at all the most appealing part of spring but definitely an important topic to discuss. With little kids having to skip class and assistants calling in sick because of the flu, we have to make sure that we are doing our best to keep ourselves healthy. I know it’s not easy as working moms to add one more thing to our never ending list, but I’ve compiled a quick guide to make it less stressful. Aside from the norm of ensuring everyone’s hands are clean and sanitized, here are my 5 ways to prevent the flu this season.
Hydration
Keeping hydrated is key in being healthy overall. Make sure that you and your loved ones are drinking plenty of water to flush out all the toxins from your body. Not getting enough water is detrimental to your health and can actually lower your immune system. So make sure to drink plenty of water. Even add a little bit of lemon in there too to get that refreshing taste with added immune boosting benefits. Check out our Lemon Water Benefits post for more detailed information.
Eat
Simple concept but very important. Sometimes our days just get so hectic and incredibly busy that we forget to eat. This is a major no no! You have to replenish your body to make sure you are getting the right nutrients. Not eating is another factor in a lowered immune system. I have crazy days at the studio but I always keep a stash of Almonds in my desk drawer or have Turkey for lunch to easily munch on. This way I’m not starving all day and I’m giving my body some proteins to reenergize.
Emergen-C
When you start to have that sinking feeling of sickness creep up on you, take an Emergen-C right away. Don’t wait until the last minute because by that time, it will be too late. These “immunity boosters” are high in Vitamin C and can help fight and prevent sickness before it happens. These are another staple in my desk drawers. I’m never without one. As a business owner, I can’t afford to get sick so I have to take all preventative measures to stay well.
Exercise
Yoga, pilates, running, weights or whatever form of exercise you choose, is a great way to prevent you from getting sick. According to a recent Flu Survey by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, maintaining a fitness regimen has been shown to prevent catching the flu. This is because when you sweat it out (indoor or outdoor) you increase your circulation and blood flow throughout the body which improves your immune system. Your body is then better equipped, along with hydration and eating right, to counter viruses that come your way.
Thieves Oil
This is one of my secret weapons. I use this for Stella and myself on a regular basis which has honestly really made a difference in our overall health. This is especially true when one of us is sick or around a lot of germs. It’s an essential oil that contains only organic ingredients and helps improve our immune systems. I use this by rubbing 7-8 drops of the Thieves Oil on the bottom of our feet in the morning and at night and then putting socks on. I recommend using this about once or twice a day, depending on how you feel. The sicker you are, the more I suggest applying this holy grail product.
